In the heart of Farum Sø lies a tiny islet, Klaus Nars Holm. It’s so small, it barely registers on a map. Yet, this unassuming speck of land holds a tale as intriguing as any grand castle. Klaus Nars Holm is privately owned, home to just two houses. One houses permanent residents, while the other serves as a vacation home. The Danish artist Nikoline Werdelin once called this tranquil islet home. Klaus Nars Holm is named after a legendary figure, Klavs Nar, the court jester of King Valdemar Atterdag. Legend says Klavs Nar, after years of loyal service, requested a fiefdom from the king. The king, perhaps with a twinkle in his eye, granted him this tiny island. Upon seeing his meager reward, Klavs Nar offered the king eel soup. The king remarked on its thinness. Klavs Nar quipped, “Thin soup, thin fiefdom.” This quick wit earned him a place in local lore and gave the island its name. Even royalty has been drawn to the charm of Klaus Nars Holm. King Frederik VII and Countess Danner, during a visit to Farumgård, enjoyed their afternoon coffee on this very islet. Imagine them, sipping their coffee, the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore their only soundtrack. Klaus Nars Holm may be small, but its history is rich with humor and royal visits, a hidden gem nestled in the waters of Farum Sø.
