“Why was this shrine built here?” someone asks. That’s the question many ask upon seeing Taniyama Shrine in Fukuoka. This is a place of reverence a testament to a pivotal era in Japanese history.

Taniyama Shrine is dedicated to Prince Kaneyoshi. He was a key figure during the Nanboku-cho period. This era saw Japan divided between the Northern and Southern Courts.

Let’s step back in time. The Nanboku-cho period began in 1336. Emperor Go-Daigo sought to restore imperial power. He challenged the Ashikaga shogunate. Ashikaga Takauji established a rival court in Kyoto. This split the nation.

Prince Kaneyoshi was Emperor Go-Daigo’s ninth son. In 1336 he was appointed Seisei Shogun. His mission was to unify Kyushu under the Southern Court’s banner.

The prince arrived in Taniyama in 1342. He was welcomed by local clans. The Taniyama clan offered him their castle as a base. He established his headquarters at Mikado-ga-hara. This became a stronghold for the Southern Court forces.

From Taniyama Prince Kaneyoshi led campaigns against the Northern Court. Battles raged across Kyushu. Neither side gained a decisive advantage. The prince remained in Taniyama until 1347. He then moved to Kikuchi to continue his fight.

After the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century a movement arose to honor those who supported the Southern Court. They were seen as loyal to the emperor. Taniyama Shrine was established in 1928. It commemorated Prince Kaneyoshi’s contributions.

The shrine aimed to promote national morality. It reminded people of the prince’s dedication. It also marked Taniyama’s role as a key site in Southern Court history.

Near the main shrine a small Hokora shrine stands. It enshrines Taniyama Goro Takasato. He was the lord of Taniyama Castle. He welcomed Prince Kaneyoshi.

A stone monument marks the site of Taniyama Castle. Another stands at Mikado-ga-hara. They remind visitors of the area’s history.

Walking through Taniyama Shrine you connect with the past. You reflect on the struggles of the Nanboku-cho period. You appreciate the sacrifices made for imperial loyalty. Taniyama Shrine stands as a symbol of devotion a reminder of a divided nation seeking unity. It honors Prince Kaneyoshi a warrior prince who once called this place home.
