Ever wondered about the evolution of a railway station? Stand here before The Old New Donnybrook Station. This unassuming spot holds a rich history.

The Old New Donnybrook Station opened way back on October 14 1872. It started small just a single platform on the west side of the line. The railway itself had only recently reached this far. The original station was quite basic.

Over the years The Old New Donnybrook Station grew. A second platform appeared in 1882. A goods shed was built in 1888. The station building we see on Platform 2 dates from 1900. The last siding was removed in 1989 showing changes in freight transport. The station even served as a temporary terminus for some V Line services from Craigieburn. This was due to a crossover between the tracks. This ended after upgrades in 2007.

The Donnybrook Loop a significant feature nearby opened in 1962. It was initially 800 meters long. It was extended to 6.8 kilometers then reduced to 2 kilometers. This demonstrates the changing needs of rail traffic.

In 1961 flashing lights replaced hand gates at the Donnybrook Road level crossing. In 1998 boom barriers increased safety. These improvements reflect the increasing traffic.

Platform 2 was extended in 2016 to accommodate longer trains. Northbound passengers could use all doors. Southbound passengers had to use only the front carriages due to Platform 1’s shorter length.

The Old New Donnybrook Station received major upgrades in 2020. These upgrades were part of the Regional Rail Revival project. They included 150 new car parking spaces improved pedestrian and bus access upgraded CCTV and the extension of Platform 1.

Today The Old New Donnybrook Station is still operational. It serves the Seymour and Shepparton lines. It connects to bus routes making it a vital transport hub. The Old New Donnybrook Station continues to serve the community. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Melbourne’s rail network.
