Gazing across the rolling hills of Duder Regional Park, can you sense the echoes of history? This isn’t just a picturesque landscape. Duder Regional Park is a living tapestry woven with threads of Maori heritage and the legacy of a pioneering family. The park, situated on the Whakakaiwhara Peninsula, boasts breathtaking views of the Hauraki Gulf. Established in 1995 when the Duder family sold their land to the Auckland Regional Council, it’s a relatively young park with a rich past. The story begins long before 1995, however, in the 1300s with the arrival of the Tainui canoe. Seeking shelter from a storm, the crew came ashore and feasted on the edible flowers of the kiekie vine, giving the peninsula its name, Whakakaiwhara. This visit marked the beginning of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki’s connection to the land. They established settlements, built fortifications, and cultivated gardens. Centuries later, in 1866, the peninsula was sold to Thomas Duder, a shipwrecked boatswain turned farmer. The Duder family transformed the land into a thriving sheep farm, a legacy that continues to shape the park’s character today. Did you know that during World War II, this tranquil landscape played a role in the war effort? The peninsula was used as a rocket range for training exercises and a partially constructed underground seaplane base exists on the site. Today, as you stroll through the park’s 165 hectares, you’ll encounter the remnants of this layered history. The park’s farm loop walk offers glimpses into its agricultural past, while the side trip to Whakakaiwhara Point reveals the site of an ancient Māori pā, a silent testament to the peninsula’s strategic importance. The calls of pūwakawaka, kererū, and riroriro fill the air. The wind whispers tales of ancient canoes and pioneering families, a reminder that Duder Regional Park is more than just a park. It is a journey through time.
