Imagine classes with about 800 students. That was the reality back in 1910 at the school we now know as Grundschule an der Nordstraße. This school has a rich history. It began as Volksschule am Holzhafen. The name reflected its proximity to the Holzhafen.
The building itself is a testament to Bremen’s architectural heritage. Designed by Baudirektor Wilhelm Knop and Max Fritsche, it was completed in 1910. The Grundschule an der Nordstraße stands as an example of Reform Architecture. Its U-shape and red clinker facade make it unique. A gabled side featuring a clock adds to its simple charm. In 1984, the building was placed under historical preservation.
Initially known as Volksschule am Holzhafen, it was renamed after Nordstraße in 1945. This change reflected the school’s location after the adjacent harbor. The school’s early years saw large class sizes. Seventeen classes accommodated around 800 students. Even after 1919, the student body remained substantial with 600 pupils.
During World War II, the school served a dual purpose. Sicherheitseinheiten were stationed here. Following the war in 1945, it transitioned to a primary school. Today the Grundschule an der Nordstraße accommodates around 250 students. These students are spread across 13 classes and one “Vorklasse.” The Vorklasse supports children learning German. A dedicated team of 19 teachers guides these young minds. The school actively collaborates with local kindergartens.
Significant changes are underway at the Grundschule an der Nordstraße. To support a four-track school in all-day operation, an extension is being built. This new construction will add a central foyer. It will also house a canteen with a large kitchen. Rooms for all-day care and two-year group clusters will be created. An elevator is planned. It ensures all floors are accessible. The historic building is being modernized. A photovoltaic system is planned. These improvements aim to create modern learning spaces.
The execution of the construction project at Grundschule Nordstraße started at the beginning of the new year. After completion of the new building, the listed old building will be adapted to the requirements for all-day operation.
Grundschule an der Nordstraße continues to evolve. It provides education to Bremen’s youngest citizens.
