Built in 1876, the North Melbourne Town Hall before us wasn’t always this grand. The original structure, a much humbler affair built in 1862, cost a mere £1200. But as the burgeoning town of Hotham, as it was then known, grew wealthier, its aspirations did too. They yearned for a town hall that reflected their newfound prosperity. In 1874, a design competition was announced, and architect George Johnson, known for his grand visions, won the day. His plans for the North Melbourne Town Hall were ambitious, incorporating not just a grand hall but also a courthouse and post office, all housed within this magnificent Italianate structure. The final cost? A cool £20,000, a testament to the town’s ambition. Today, the North Melbourne Town Hall stands as a proud reminder of those boom years.
