How did a church in Bellwood, Illinois, become a beacon of faith for the Malankara Orthodox community? Welcome to Saint Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church. The story of this church begins not here in the United States, but in Kerala, India, with the legacy of Saint Gregorios of Parumala. He was the first canonized Saint of the Malankara Orthodox Church. The church we see today, a symbol of faith and resilience, was once just a dream for a small group of believers led by Rev. Fr. Daniel George. In 1994, their dream began to take shape. They held their first service at St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in Chicago. The community steadily grew, eventually necessitating a larger space. In 2000, they acquired this very building in Bellwood. This act marked a significant moment for the Malankara Orthodox community in the area. The building was consecrated and dedicated to the continuation of Jesus Christ’s mission. Just a few years later, in 2003, it was elevated to the status of a cathedral by His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios. This move made it the second Malankara Orthodox Cathedral in the United States. Saint Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church stands as a testament to the dedication and faithfulness of its community. It serves as a vibrant hub for worship, fellowship, and the preservation of their rich cultural and religious heritage.
