A siren wails in the distance. Its mournful cry cuts through the crisp Leipzig air. Here we stand before Feuerwache Nordost a beacon of safety on the city’s northeastern edge.
This isn’t just any fire station. Feuerwache Nordost opened its doors on January 1 2015. It took roughly two years to build. Its creation followed the Leipzig city council’s fire protection plan.
It’s strategically positioned. The station serves Paunsdorf Schoenefeld Heiterblick Plausig-Portitz and Mockau. It also covers large sections of the A14 and A38 autobahns. Leipzig’s biggest industrial area is also under its protection.
Around 50 firefighters work here. They’re split into three shifts. They’re always on duty. They operate from an incident command vehicle a rescue and fire engine and an aerial rescue vehicle. That’s 13 operational functions running 24/7.
This fire station is eco-friendly. It uses solar thermal energy to heat water. Rainwater is collected for reuse. A pellet heating system provides warmth. A backup power generator keeps everything running. Even a power outage won’t stop them.
The illuminated multi-purpose area is impressive. Firefighters use it for training. They also use it for fitness activities. It doubles as a safe landing zone for rescue helicopters.
Feuerwache Nordost isn’t just about fighting fires. It’s about preparedness. It’s about community safety. It’s about the dedication of the firefighters who serve here. A small pharmacy and clothing storage area are located within the station. Ambulance crews are stationed here. They serve the entire northeast sector of Leipzig. They respond to emergencies around the clock. One area they frequently service is a major logistics center for an online retailer.
This station is more than bricks and mortar. It represents peace of mind for the residents of this part of Leipzig. It embodies a constant readiness to face any challenge. That silent promise hangs heavy in the air the siren’s wail fading into the distance. The Feuerwache Nordost stands ready. Always.
