Picture this a bustling Parisian street named Rue des Parisii. Its name whispers tales of a long-forgotten tribe. The Parisii a Celtic people who once ruled this very land. They settled along the Seine around 250 BCE. Their influence is etched in the very soul of this city.

Imagine their lives. They built a mighty fortress in Nanterre a nearby suburb. They established a military post on the Île de la Cité. This strategic island controlled the crossing of the Seine. The Parisii were shrewd traders. They controlled the vital river crossings. They charged tolls for passage up and down the Seine. This made them wealthy and powerful.

Their prosperity however was short-lived. Julius Caesar and his Roman legions arrived in 57 BCE. The Parisii joined other Gallic tribes. They fought bravely against the Roman invaders. The Battle of Lutetia was fierce. It was fought on the land now known as the Champ de Mars. The Romans however were victorious.

Lutetia as the Romans called it became a Roman city. The Parisii were absorbed into the Roman Empire. Lutetia was not a major Roman city. It housed perhaps 8000 inhabitants. It wasn’t until 355 AD that Lutetia gained importance. Julian the Apostate made it his base. In 360 AD his soldiers proclaimed him Augustus. The city was renamed Paris in honor of its original inhabitants the Parisii.
