Perhaps the wind feels stronger here. Welcome to Hármashatárhegy. This 495-meter high mountain offers more than just a climb. It is located on the Buda side of Budapest.

Hármashatárhegy translates to Three Border Mountain. Until the 19th century, it marked the meeting point of three distinct towns. These were Buda, Óbuda and Pesthidegkút. Today, they are unified as Budapest. Only the boundary between the II and III district runs over Hármashatárhegy. The name has remained.

This area is popular for outdoor activities. Many come to Hármashatárhegy for hiking and cycling. Paragliding is common, too. In winter, sledding attracts many visitors. The Országos Kéktúra crosses the summit. The Bergwanderweg Eisenach-Budapest also passes here. A television tower and a restaurant are located nearby.

The summit of Hármashatárhegy is known for its wind. Few trees offer shelter. Snow lingers longer than in the city center. Temperatures are typically a few degrees lower than on the Pest side.

Geologically, Hármashatárhegy is fascinating. It is an uplift covered with nummulitic limestone. It is mainly composed of dolomite. The northeastern part merges with Vihar Mountain. Tectonic movement formed the mountain. Its slopes are stepped and forested. The eastern slope is especially steep.

Hármashatárhegy is separated by saddles from other hills. To the north, the Virágos Saddle separates it from Csúcs Hill. In the south, the Farkas-torok Valley separates it from Tábor Hill. The barren pinnacle provides views. You can see the Buda Hills, the Pilis, the Visegrád Mountains and the Börzsöny Mountains.

Only black pine trees survive the harsh conditions. Black pine was used for reforestation between 1885 and 1898. Over 879 hectares were reforested. This provided jobs for locals. It halted soil degradation. Now, indigenous species are being reintroduced. Without this reforestation, Budapest’s green space would be smaller.

Hármashatárhegy has potential for air sports. Lajos Rotter wanted to create a glider site here. He faced objections from aviation authorities. He proved the area suitable with a one-hour flight. Ernő Rubik Sr. designed planes here. He designed 25 gliders and 5 powered aircraft.

A guesthouse for pilots was unveiled in 1940. It was built with donations. After World War II, the pilot center declined. In 2012, Pilis Park Forestry Ltd. began tidying the area. They created the Hármashatár Hill Hiking Centre.

Now, an event center and a restaurant await visitors. There is also a forest school. A lookout tower provides views of Budapest. It was built on the foundations of anti-aircraft turrets. The lookout tower has a unique wood structure.

Károly Guckler was crucial in restoring the area. He replaced oak stumps with forests. He planted black pines to improve the soil. Thanks to him, the hill is densely forested again. The Guckler Pathway is named in his honor.

The forests of Buda received attention. Before 1860, they supplied firewood to the capital. Logging was stopped due to public concern. Guckler started working to restore the forests. He replaced the oak stumps.

Between 1917 and 1918, Guckler created a 3.5 km walking path. It was part of the Panorama route. In 1926, the Hármashatárhegy tourist house was built. In 1929, the Árpád lookout tower was built.

In the 1930s, gliding became popular. In 1940, the Magyar Aero Szövetség opened a pilot home. It functions as the Rotter Lajos Tourist House today.

During World War II, anti-aircraft turrets were built here. In 2016, the Rotter Lajos Tourist House was renovated. The Guckler Károly lookout tower was also completed. The Pilisi Park Forestry Ltd. manages the area. Today, Hármashatárhegy remains a popular destination.
