Tucked away in Irving, Texas, stands Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church. It’s a place with a story as unique as its shimmering iconography. Saint Basil’s wasn’t always the grand structure you see before you. Its origins trace back to a small mission in 1982, nurtured by St. John Chrysostom Church in Houston. The faithful gathered weekly, their voices echoing in the halls of the University of Dallas and Holy Trinity Seminary. A determined group envisioned a permanent home, a beacon of Byzantine Catholicism in the Dallas Metroplex. Their search led them to two acres in Irving, crowned by a modest four-bedroom house. This unassuming dwelling, centrally located and accessible, became the cornerstone of their dream. In 1988, the mission blossomed into Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church. Father Robert Karl, from the Houston parish, became the first pastor-administrator, guiding the fledgling community. The parishioners, though few, poured their hearts and resources into transforming the dilapidated house. A former game room and garage underwent a metamorphosis, becoming a chapel complete with an altar, an icon screen, and space for sixty souls. On Palm Sunday, March 27, 1988, the first liturgy was held, breathing life into Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church. The air crackled with anticipation as Bishop John Bilock, alongside the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dallas, dedicated the church on October 9, 1988. The joyous celebration spilled outdoors, a testament to the community’s vibrant spirit. Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church thrived, its congregation quickly outgrowing the small chapel. A new church seemed financially unattainable. Ingenuity, however, found a solution. The existing swimming pool was ingeniously converted into the foundation for an extension, a roof stretching above to create a larger sanctuary. This expanded Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church was rededicated on November 19, 1989, another outdoor feast marking the occasion. In 1993, the final touch was added. The church’s interior bloomed with vibrant iconography, transforming the space into a visual prayer. The rich colors and intricate details continue to inspire awe and reverence within Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church.
