Gazing at Wedgwood Community Church, one might sense the echoes of its rich history. Wedgwood Community Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in Seattle’s Wedgwood neighborhood. It has been a spiritual anchor for generations, a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach.
The story of Wedgwood Community Church begins in 1907, miles away from its current location, as Green Lake Baptist Church near Green Lake Station. The church’s first home was a rented space called Kidd’s Hall. Tragedy struck in 1921 when a fire destroyed Kidd’s Hall. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt at 9th Avenue NE and NE 75th Street, renaming themselves Calvary Baptist Church.
The construction of Interstate 5 in the 1950s threatened the church’s second home. Once again, the congregation rallied, relocating to its present location at the corner of 30th Ave NE and NE 82nd Street in the heart of Wedgwood. The year was 1955, and the church became Wedgwood Baptist Church. Finally settled, the church underwent one final transformation. In 1994, acknowledging the diverse Christian backgrounds of its community members, the church adopted its current name: Wedgwood Community Church.
The church offers a blend of traditional and contemporary worship styles, welcoming attendees in both formal and informal attire. Every Sunday at 11:00 am, the community gathers for a worship celebration, complete with a printed bulletin and communion. The church is led by Pastor Rev. Wim Mauldin. It also hosts a vibrant youth ministry and weekly small groups, fostering connection and spiritual growth. Wedgwood Community Church offers more than just spiritual guidance. It serves as a community hub, offering its space for music rehearsals, performances, and other events. The church also opens its doors to community groups, providing a much-needed space for meetings and gatherings.
Wedgwood Community Church’s journey reflects a commitment to faith, resilience, and community. It stands as a symbol of how a small group of believers, starting in a rented hall, can grow and evolve into a vital part of the community fabric. More than just a building, Wedgwood Community Church embodies the spirit of togetherness, offering a welcoming space for everyone to connect with God and each other.
