“Ubin Volunteer Hub: A community’s heart, beating still.” Today, we stand before the Ubin Volunteer Hub, a place that has witnessed Pulau Ubin’s transformation over decades. Originally built in 1961 by islanders, this structure of zinc and wood served as a simple community hall. Five years later, it officially became the Pulau Ubin Community Centre. This Ubin Volunteer Hub wasn’t just a building; it was the island’s social lifeline. Imagine the excitement as crowds of 200 to 300 residents gathered for movie screenings on the basketball court. Every four months, a large cloth tied to two poles transformed the court into an open-air cinema. Inside, there was a reading lounge stocked with newspapers, offering a quiet escape. A table tennis room provided friendly competition and laughter. The Ubin Volunteer Hub even hosted kindergarten classes, nurturing the island’s youngest generation. The year 1993 saw renovations breathing new life into the center. However, in 2003, the community center closed its doors. But the story doesn’t end there. The Ubin Volunteer Hub was reborn, repurposed as a hub for conservation. Now managed by NParks, it facilitates and coordinates volunteer activities, continuing its legacy of service to Pulau Ubin. The former basketball court, now the Assembly Area, even boasts solar panels as part of the Ubin Micro-grid. The Ubin Volunteer Hub is a testament to the island’s enduring spirit, adapting and evolving with the times.
