Can a clock tell more than just time? At Plaza El Carrillón, the answer is a resounding yes. This isn’t just a plaza; it’s a symphony of time, a monument to the many ways we measure and mark its passage. Dominating the contemplative Plaza Mariana, El Carrillón’s imposing structure stands 75 feet tall, its tower reaching a proud 125 feet towards the sky. Architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez didn’t just design a clock tower; he created a narrative. Nineteen bells ring out from the tower’s wheel, a chorus of melodies ranging from the sacred Ave Maria to the playful tunes of Cri-Cri, the beloved Mexican children’s songwriter. Look closely at the top of El Carrillón. You’ll see not one, not two, but four different kinds of clocks. A civil clock and an astronomical clock adorn the front. A sundial graces the right side, basking in the sun’s embrace. On the left, an Aztec clock connects us to the ancient ways of measuring time, based on lunar observations and the rhythms of harvest and sowing. At the heart of El Carrillón is a circular depiction of the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s apparitions to Juan Diego, a vital part of Mexican religious history. The plaza itself adds another layer to this story. It’s a space where the past and present intertwine, where ancient traditions meet modern architecture, where the chimes of the bells echo the enduring spirit of Mexico City.
