“A warm and welcoming community.” That’s how South Street Baptist Church describes itself. Today, we will uncover the story of this church. South Street Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and community.
South Street Baptist Church stands as a beacon. Its story began far from here. The roots trace back to Meopham in 1927. Meopham was then a small farming village. Mount Zion Strict Baptist Church was nearby. A dispute over communion led some members to leave. They formed the Meopham Assembly Hall.
Land became available. On June 5th, 1927, the church was officially founded. A simple “tin hut” served as their first mission hall on this very site. It was a humble beginning. The church was independent. It had no mainstream denomination affiliation. Believer’s baptism was practiced. The Word of God was preached. William Dereham and local speakers led services.
Time and World War II took their toll. The original building deteriorated. Rebuilding became necessary. In 1976, the members had a vision. They wanted to expand the church. Jack Eade, a Lay Pastor, guided the building plans. He served as an inspiration for 13 years. Jack Eade also renamed the church.
In 1987, Rev Alan Rogers became the first full-time minister. He was inducted on June 3rd, 1987. Rev Rogers resigned in 2000. The church experienced consolidation and spiritual growth during his time. For six years, there was no minister. The village changed. It became a commuter location for London.
Today, South Street Baptist Church continues its mission. The church is located at 66-68 Greenwich South Street. You can reach them at 020 8691 1270. South Street Baptist Church is a registered charity. The charity number is 1203167.
