Gazing out from the Nikkorin Viewpoint, what do you feel? Perhaps the gentle caress of the wind whispers secrets of centuries past. Maybe the rustling leaves murmur stories of ancient travelers. This viewpoint on Mount Aburayama isn’t just a place to admire the sprawling cityscape of Fukuoka. It’s a portal to a rich history, intimately connected to the Nikkorin, a revered figure from Mount Aburayama’s past. From this very spot, you can trace the contours of Fukuoka’s vibrant heart, the twinkling lights mimicking a scattered handful of jewels. On clear days, your gaze can stretch even further, across Hakata Bay to Nokonoshima and Oshima Islands, a breathtaking panorama that leaves you speechless.

The Nikkorin Viewpoint offers more than just stunning views. It’s a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling energy of Fukuoka. This serene spot allows you to pause and reflect, connecting with the mountain’s unique spirit. Mount Aburayama itself earned its name from a fascinating historical event. A high priest named Seiga Shonin, arriving from the Western Regions, pioneered a remarkable feat right here. He became the first person in Japan to refine oil from camellia fruits. This innovation forever imprinted its mark on the mountain, giving rise to the name Aburayama, literally “Oil Mountain”.

The mountain holds another treasure: Aburayama Kannon, also known as Shokakuji Temple. Nestled just below this very viewpoint, it’s easy to imagine the temple’s vibrant past. Seiga Shonin also enshrined a thousand-armed Kannon, carved from a white camellia tree, within the temple during the Tenpyo era (729-748). Picture the temple grounds bustling with hundreds of monks, a testament to its former glory before the fires of the Warring States period (1573-1592) ravaged its halls. Although rebuilt and renamed in 1694, the enduring name Aburayama Kannon echoes through time, a whisper of its deep-rooted history.

The Nikkorin Viewpoint is easily accessible thanks to the Oil Mountain Sightseeing Road. This 6.9 km stretch, starting from Ropponmatsu Nishi Intersection in central Fukuoka, winds its way up the mountain, inviting you to explore. Imagine traversing this road in springtime, surrounded by the delicate blush of cherry blossoms and the vibrant hues of azaleas. The viewpoint’s proximity to the city and the well-maintained paths make it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike, a place where one can savor the beauty of Fukuoka’s nightscape. The flickering lights of cars tracing paths through the city, the distant glow of Fukuoka Airport, and perhaps even the flash of aircraft landing, add a dynamic layer to the already captivating scene. From the gentle rustling of leaves to the panoramic vista that stretches before you, the Nikkorin Viewpoint offers a truly unforgettable experience, a harmonious blend of nature, history, and captivating beauty.
