Rumors swirl around the Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami. Who truly designed this magnificent structure? Some say Mimar Sinan conceived it before leaving for Mecca. Others claim Davud Ağa completed the design afterward.

The Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami stands as a testament to Ottoman grandeur. Commissioned by Mesih Mehmed Pasha a grand vizier of Murad III. Its story is etched in stone and whispers through the ages. The mosque’s construction concluded in 1586. It reflects the ambition of its patron and the architectural genius of the era.

Mesih Mehmed Pasha served as governor-general of Egypt. He returned to Istanbul. He became Grand Vizier. His tenure was brief but impactful. He died in 1589. He was buried near his mosque. The Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami became his eternal legacy.

There is debate about Mimar Sinan’s role in the design. Sinan went on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1584. Mehmed Subaşı took his place. Sinan included the Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami in a draft of his autobiography. He omitted it from a later version. The mosque’s foundation inscription marks its completion in AH 994 or 1585-86.

The Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami is built on a sloping site. The west side rests on a vaulted substructure. Shops occupy this space. North of the mosque is a forecourt. An arcade with pillars and small domes surrounds it on three sides. The entrance is through a domed gatehouse. Taps for ritual ablutions line the northern arcade. Mesih Pasha’s grave stands in the forecourt’s center. It replaces the usual fountain. The mosque’s north facade features a double portico. Five arches support five small domes.

The main dome of Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami spans 12.8 meters. It rests on a drum with 24 windows. Eight stabilizing turrets encircle it. Five half-domes form the mihrab’s exedra. They also form the exedras at the four corners. Aisles flank the mosque. Three small domes cover them. Large framing arches group windows on the lower levels.

Close to the Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami lies the Hırka-i Şerif Camii. Mesih Mehmet Paşa’s open-air tomb is next to his mosque. Hasan Paşa had a small mosque here earlier. Hadım Mesih Mehmet Paşa rebuilt it after it was ruined.

The mosque suffered damage in an 1894 earthquake. It underwent repairs in 1936-1939 and 1955-1957. A new addition was added to the Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami in 1987. The mosque’s walls are masonry. The dome has a steel frame. The mihrab and minbar are adorned with Kütahya tiles.

As you stand before the Mesih Mehmet Paşa Cami consider its layers of history. Think about the men who shaped it. Envision the generations who have prayed within its walls. This mosque is more than stone and mortar. It is a living testament to faith, art, and the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
