Did you know that hidden in Montmartre exists one of the last urban wastelands of Paris? This is the Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent. This unique space allows nature to reclaim its place. The Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent offers a refuge for biodiversity right in the city center.

Once, this land belonged to the Hôtel Demarne. Today it is the Musée de Montmartre. At the start of the 20th century, it was a public square. Later, it was abandoned for many years.

In the early 1980s, improvements were made to stabilize the slope. The goal was to preserve the area. They wanted to let the local flora develop spontaneously. In 1987, the City of Paris made it an official biodiversity enclave.

Today, the Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent covers about 1,500 square meters. It hosts many wild plants, a pond, and varied wildlife. You might spot insects, butterflies, toads, and maybe even tawny owls. Horse chestnut trees overhang the paths. You will also find stinging nettles. Educational signs tell us they can treat rheumatism.

Once inside the Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent, it’s hard to believe you are in Paris. It is a true escape. The trees, plants, and flowers self-sow here. They created their own little meadow.

The garden is only open a few days each year. This protects the vegetation. Usually, it’s open from April 1st to October 31st. You can visit the first Sunday of each month from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Also, the third Wednesday of the month from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

The Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent suspends animations and visits due to expansion work.

Visitors enjoy the tranquility. They appreciate the chance to reconnect with nature. Guides share information about the garden’s biodiversity. They point out the parasitic ivy. They show how sap rises and falls. They might even find a midwife toad. Birds like martins, jays, wrens, and robins add to the charm. The pond is covered in duckweed.

The Jardin sauvage Saint-Vincent is more than just a garden. It’s a reminder of nature’s resilience. It is a place where wildness thrives. It’s a secret gem in the heart of Montmartre.
