“Maximum light and the best views.” That’s what the architects of V House sought to give its residents. The V House. It stands as a testament to innovative design in Copenhagen’s Ørestad district. Completed in 2005 it was among the first residential projects in the area.
The V House gained its name from its shape. From above it resembles the letter V. This clever design is mirrored by the M House nearby. Together they create a visually striking complex.
The architects at BIG and JDS sought to maximize views and sunlight. They twisted and turned the building’s blocks. This eliminated direct views into other apartments. The V shape ensures every unit gets direct sunlight daily. Simulations were used to optimize the building’s orientation.
The V House acts like a balcony condo. Its design encourages community. Wedge-shaped balconies on the south facade minimize shade. They maximize space. These balconies create vertical backyard communities. Neighbors connect within a 10-meter radius on warm days.
Inside the V House you will find a variety of apartments. There are over 40 unique types within the V-shaped building. The apartments interlock like Tetris blocks. This creates architectural surprises. It also presents furnishing challenges.
The architects lifted the V House. This created a semi-private public court. Landscaping flows from the street. It goes under the V House. It extends into the courtyard. This forms a spatial unity. It fosters a sense of community.
The V House features exquisite materials. Large glass facades are framed by fancy wood. Solid oak floors add warmth. Dark hardwood is used for the balcony floors. Walls and ceilings have a raw white concrete finish. White painted steel forms the internal stairs and handrails. Glass makes up all the apartments’ external walls.
The V theme is apparent in the triangular balconies. They give the building a unique appearance. The building is also lower on the Amager East side. This creates a smooth transition. It bridges the old buildings of Amager and the new buildings of Ørestad.
The V House is more than just a building. It’s a community. It’s a design statement. It exemplifies modern living in Copenhagen.
