Who was François de Larderel you ask? Step into Place François de Larderel and let me tell you a story. This Parisian square is named after a remarkable man a true pioneer. He wasn’t a Parisian though. François de Larderel was a French engineer. He emigrated to Tuscany. There he revolutionized the world of geothermal energy.

His story began in Vienna. He was the son of a Viennese merchant. He moved to Livorno in Tuscany. In 1818 he developed a groundbreaking technique. He harnessed the steam from the area’s lagoni. He used it to power boilers. This was vital for extracting boric acid. The acid was found in the naturally rich mud.

His innovation improved around 1827. Then in 1833 he began drilling. This increased the steam supply significantly. This laid the foundation for future geothermal electricity generation. François de Larderel’s relentless innovation led to substantial economic success. It also benefited a hamlet near Pomarance. He resided there and reshaped it according to his capitalist and paternalistic vision. He created numerous jobs. He also engaged in charitable work and philanthropy.

Grand Duke Leopold II of Habsburg-Tuscany recognized Larderel’s achievements. He made Larderel Count of Montecerboli. This was named after the site of his original establishment. In 1846 the Grand Duke honored Larderel by renaming the hamlet. It became Larderello now part of Pomarance. The grand count also had a magnificent family palace built in Livorno in the 1830s. It was later expanded. The palace’s neoclassical façade is crowned with a tympanum. The tympanum shows symbols of commerce mechanics and agriculture.

Larderel’s legacy extends beyond Tuscany. His son Frédéric François continued his work. Then his grandson Florestan established boric acid refining in Larderello. This Parisian square stands as a small but important reminder of François de Larderel’s impact. He is rightfully remembered as the father of geothermics. This was a man who harnessed nature’s power transforming a humble hamlet into a center of innovation. His impact on the world’s energy landscape resonates even today. As you leave Place François de Larderel remember this unsung hero. Remember his contribution to harnessing the earth’s energy.
