“Give Me Jesus.” Can you hear it? That Christian spiritual echoes through time. It connects us to the very roots of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. This wasn’t just any church. It was the cornerstone of a community. It focused on social life in the heart of Clarksville.

Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church began shortly after Clarksville was settled in 1871. Imagine those early days. The congregation was small. Money was tight. They couldn’t afford land or a building. So, prayer and fellowship happened in the home of Edwin and Mary Smith. Their home is now known as the Haskell House.

Now, Mary Smith. She had a ritual. Every morning, she would step outside her home. Then, she’d sing “Give Me Jesus.” Other women would join her. The song became popular among Black congregations.

July 1882 marked a turning point for Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. Church members scraped together $50. They purchased the land where Sweet Home now stands. Initially, services were held under a brush arbor. But the community had big dreams. They wanted a real church building. Jacob Fontaine was Sweet Home’s first minister. He also started Austin’s first Black newspaper, “The Gold Dollar.”

The current church building was constructed in 1935. It’s the third building. Fun fact the first two faced east. The current one faces north.

Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It holds worship services every Sunday. Bible Study happens every Wednesday. The church also hosts the popular annual Peace Through Pie event. It celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. The event raises funds for the church. Reverend Steve Manning is the current Pastor. Sweet Home stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. It all started with a song and a dream.
