Stepping onto Rue Pierre Galais, feel the weight of history beneath your feet. This seemingly ordinary street in Ivry-sur-Seine holds a remarkable story. It’s named after a young resistance fighter, Pierre Galais. He fought bravely against the Nazi occupation during World War II.

Rue Pierre Galais wasn’t always its name. Originally, it was part of Rue Bourgeois. In 1945, the city council decided to rename the street in honor of Pierre Galais. This courageous young man, born in Amiens in 1922, joined the resistance under the alias “Captain Neuville”. He played a vital role in the liberation of Paris. Pierre later joined Colonel Fabien’s troops, continuing the fight against German forces in Alsace. Tragically, he lost his life in Gravelotte, Moselle, on September 26, 1944, just weeks after the liberation of Paris.

Pierre’s dedication to his country and his bravery earned him several posthumous honors. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm, knighted into the Legion of Honor, and received the Médaille de la Résistance Française. The American authorities also honored him with the Bronze Star. His contributions were not limited to combat. He also established resistance groups in various French cities.

Rue Pierre Galais serves as a quiet reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. It is a testament to the courage and determination of those who fought for freedom. As you walk along this street, remember Pierre Galais. His story, etched into the name of this street, echoes through the heart of Ivry-sur-Seine.
