Here at Place de la Rose, imagine farmers once dominated this very area. The La Rose district, located in Marseille’s 13th arrondissement, boasts a rich history. In 1820, discoveries unveiled ancient brick coffins. These finds suggest human activity dating back to the Gallo-Roman era.

Agriculture thrived here thanks to the Jarret stream and several springs. Throughout the 20th century, it remained a central part of life in La Rose. Agri-food businesses also found a home here. A biscuit factory, semolina factory, and flour mill were all established in La Rose.

For a long time, La Rose, like Les Olives and La Croix-Rouge, stayed agricultural. Its location lacked sea access and good communication routes. This isolation shaped its character.

The early 20th century brought the electric tramway to La Rose. It even served as the line’s terminus until 1914. The network expanded, and the tram no longer served the district. However, in 1978, La Rose became the terminus of the La Rose-Castellane metro line.

Today, Place de la Rose is part of a vibrant community. Approximately 14,000 people call this district home. It has grown significantly since its agricultural days. The area changed rapidly in the 1960s. This was due to a demographic boom fueled by people arriving from North Africa and overseas territories.

La Rose is more than just a place. It is a testament to Marseille’s diverse history. Ancient Roman settlers, farmers, and modern residents have all left their mark. As you explore Place de la Rose, remember its journey. From agricultural heartland to a bustling urban district, La Rose embodies Marseille’s spirit. The metro viaduct here is a landmark. It is a symbol of connection and progress.
