“What if I told you this building redefines marine research in the Philippines?” That’s the Marine Science Institute. It stands as a beacon of knowledge within the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus.
Originally, it started as the Marine Sciences Center. The Board of Regents approved its charter on March 28, 1974. Dr. Edgardo D. Gomez became its acting director. His task was to establish the center.
In February 1975, operations began at the U.P. Natural Sciences Research Institute building. It transformed into an institute on April 23, 1985. This allowed it to offer graduate programs.
Dr. Gomez secured a land donation in Bolinao, Pangasinan on November 9, 1983. This led to the Bolinao Marine Laboratory. It was established in 1986. Grants helped build laboratories and dormitories.
The Marine Science Institute pursues research. It also teaches and does extension work. These cover marine biology, chemistry, oceanography, and geology. The institute offers graduate and undergraduate courses.
On April 22, 2024, the institute marked its 50th anniversary. It was renamed Edgardo D. Gomez Hall. The Marine Biodiversity Resources and Information System building was also inaugurated. It houses reference collections of marine organisms. These collections also include natural products. Professor Maria Celia Malay made this announcement.
The Marine Science Institute engages in diverse research. This includes oceanography, marine biology, and biotechnology.
Here, Professor Gavino Trono founded the G.T. Velasquez Herbarium. It is the largest phycological herbarium in the Philippines. It holds over 55,000 dried specimens from 70 countries. Seaweed accounts for 96% of these.
Three alumni became National Scientists. They are Lourdes Cruz, Edgardo Gomez, and Gavino Trono.
The institute empowers the marine sector through research. Research programs aim to improve our understanding of marine environments. The goal is effective conservation and sustainable resource use.
Extension work remains integral to the Marine Science Institute’s objectives. Training and technical services share expertise. Workshops and conferences cover monitoring techniques. They also cover coastal zone management and habitat restoration.
The Marine Science Institute provides numerous resources. Laboratories are equipped for experiments. The UP MSI Library holds books and scientific publications. It also holds theses, dissertations, and audio-visual materials.
The administrative office handles daily operations. It manages academics, research, and collaborations. Expeditions are also part of its work.
In 1990, the Marine Physical Sciences program began. The Marine Biotechnology program followed in 2002.
Presidential Proclamation No. 518 designated the Marine Science Institute as the National Center of Excellence in the Marine Sciences in 1994.
In 2013, PEMSEA recognized the institute. It became the Regional Center of Excellence in Coral Reef Research and Marine Protected Areas.
By the end of 2023, 232 MSc and 34 PhD students had graduated. The Marine Science Institute building renamed Edgardo D. Gomez Hall symbolizes a legacy of marine science leadership. It inspires future generations to protect our oceans.
