The hum. A low thrumming vibration that resonates through your very bones. That’s the Southeast Chicago Energy Project. You stand before it a colossal testament to human ingenuity.
The Southeast Chicago Energy Project isn’t just a power plant. It’s a story of collaboration and innovation. Exelon Generation and Peoples Energy Resources Corp joined forces. Their goal To bring much-needed energy to Chicago’s southeast side. This wasn’t just about electricity. It was about revitalizing a whole industrial corridor.
Graycor Industrial led the construction. JWP/Hyre Electric and AMS Mechanical Systems were key partners. They installed eight massive General Electric 6B combustion turbines. These weren’t your grandpa’s turbines. Each one a powerhouse generating 50.9 MW of electricity. Imagine the sheer power. The heat. The controlled explosion that fuels the city.
The project wasn’t without its complexities. Sargent & Lundy handled the design. They oversaw procurement of equipment. They obtained permits. They even managed the startup and commissioning. It was a massive undertaking. A feat of engineering. They even had to build a power distribution center and an operations building. A switchyard was also necessary. All to manage this immense flow of energy. This wasn’t just about constructing a building. It was about building a system. A complex interconnected web that supplies power to the city.
The project’s completion marked a turning point. In June 2002 the Southeast Chicago Energy Project became operational. This provided Chicago with 407.2 MW of electricity. It’s a substantial increase in energy capacity. The project continues to serve the city. It helps maintain the city’s electric grid stability.
Peoples Energy Resources Corp initially supplied natural gas. Exelon Generation later acquired the project entirely in 2006. They control 100 percent of the output to this day. Peoples Energy however remains the fuel supplier. A testament to the ongoing partnership that continues to power Chicago.
So stand here and feel the hum. Feel the energy. Know that the Southeast Chicago Energy Project is more than just a power plant. It’s a symbol of progress. A symbol of Chicago’s enduring spirit. It’s a story whispered on the wind. A story written in the lines of power.
