Did you know that the Mahindarama Buddhist Temple is the only Sri Lankan temple in Penang? It is also one of the few in Malaysia housing relics of the Buddha. Right here at the Mahindarama Buddhist Temple, we will explore its rich history and unique features.

The Mahindarama Buddhist Temple becomes a focal point for Vesak Day. This is an annual celebration in George Town. The temple’s story began in 1918. A. Pemaratana Maha Thera, a monk from Ceylon, founded it. He was on his way to Singapore. He stayed at the Batu Lanchang Hokkien Cemetery. There, he gave sermons.

Devotees like M. V. Gregory supported him. They bought land at Caunter Hall. They gave it to the monk. This allowed him to build the first Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in Penang. A shrine hall was built. It was supported by devotees. Pemaratana used it for his missionary work. A school named Sāriputta was also established. It taught Theravāda Buddhism and English. The temple was initially named Caunter Hall Buddhist Temple.

The land at Caunter Hall was prone to flooding. A new location was needed. Pemaratana passed away in 1927. His pupil, W. Sumanasara Thero, took over. He continued the relocation. He also constructed additional structures at the current site on Jalan Kampar. This happened in the 1930s.

Over the years, more buildings were added to the Mahindarama Buddhist Temple. A library and a school were completed in 1957 and 1959. A bell tower was erected in 1969. A multi-purpose building followed in 1991. In 2001, the temple achieved a significant milestone. It became the first temple in Malaysia to house Buddha’s relics.

Chief Monk E. Inda-ratana Maha Thera received the relics in India. The two bone fragments are displayed in the main prayer hall. Pemaratana’s ashes are enshrined in a stupa on the temple grounds. A ficus religiosa or Bodhi tree also stands here. It is said to be a descendant of the original Bodhi tree. Bhikkhunī Saṅghamittā brought that tree to Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. Buddha attained enlightenment under it. A sapling was brought from British Ceylon. It was planted after Pemaratana’s death in 1927.

The main prayer hall is called Sīma. Sri Lankan artisans created its carvings. All materials for decoration came from Sri Lanka. Today, the Mahindarama Buddhist Temple remains a vital center. It attracts Buddhists from Malaysia and beyond. The Mahindarama Buddhist Temple stands as a testament to history. It embodies devotion and architectural beauty. Its serene atmosphere offers a unique spiritual experience. It welcomes all who seek peace and enlightenment.
