“Floating dream” is perhaps the best way to describe Île de Bercy. This island sits serenely in the Lac Daumesnil. It offers a unique escape within Paris.

Île de Bercy is one of two islands. Its sister island is Reuilly. Both reside in the Lac Daumesnil within the Bois de Vincennes. A bridge connects Île de Bercy to Reuilly. This makes Reuilly the only access point to the island from the lake’s shore.

Imagine Adolphe Alphand. He was the mastermind behind this artificial paradise. In 1860, he designed the Bois de Vincennes. It was to compete with London’s parks. Alphand created winding paths and picturesque views. The Lac Daumesnil was his centerpiece with two islands.

Île de Bercy spans approximately two hectares. Its bean-like shape stretches 250 meters long and 100 meters wide. A walking path encircles the island. This path offers stunning views and excludes cars.

The island boasts remarkable trees. A common plane tree planted in 1860 towers at 45 meters. Its circumference measured 4.05 meters in 2011. An Irish yew planted in 1870 stands five meters tall. Another notable plane tree planted in 1895 reaches 35 meters. Its girth was 5.10 meters in 2011. A tulip tree from Virginia planted in 1930 climbs to 22 meters. Bald cypress trees add to the unique collection. One, planted in 1930, is 20 meters tall. A persimmon tree from Virginia, planted in 1935, stands 12 meters high.

Île de Bercy is a peaceful haven. It’s a place to escape the city’s hustle. The island invites you to stroll. It allows you to discover rare trees. You can relax by the water. The island’s microclimate is unique. It is said to be four degrees cooler than Paris. This makes it a refreshing retreat. The island’s quiet charm is undeniable. It offers a tranquil experience.

As you leave Île de Bercy, reflect on its creation. Consider Alphand’s vision. Remember the towering trees. Let the island’s peace linger. Carry a piece of this Parisian paradise with you.
