Across the Fulda River, the Kragenhöfer Brücke stands as a testament to time and resilience. This isn’t the first bridge to grace this spot. An earlier Kragenhöfer Brücke, a magnificent five-arched stone structure, was completed in 1855 as part of the Hanoverian Southern Railway. Imagine the elegance of this stone giant, its arches spanning the river with 19th-century grandeur. Sadly, this architectural marvel met a tragic end in April 1945, destroyed by retreating German troops. The Kragenhöfer Brücke you see today rose from the remnants of its predecessor. In 1949, a steel truss bridge, a so-called Schaper-Krupp-Reichsbahnbrücke, was built, utilizing the surviving abutments. While not as visually stunning as the original, this Kragenhöfer Brücke serves as a symbol of recovery and adaptation. It stands 27 meters tall, slightly shorter than the original 30-meter giant, but still a significant presence in the landscape. This bridge isn’t just a crossing; it’s a story of destruction and rebirth, a tangible link to Kassel’s complex history.
