Amidst the bustling cityscape of Singapore, stands St. Margaret’s Secondary School, a testament to the enduring power of education and the remarkable vision of its founder, Maria Dyer. In 1842, Maria, a missionary, was deeply moved by the plight of young girls sold as domestic servants. She established St. Margaret’s, originally the Chinese Girls’ School, as a sanctuary for these vulnerable children. Imagine the transformation, from a small shophouse on North Bridge Road to the esteemed institution we see today at 111 Farrer Road. St. Margaret’s is not just the oldest girls’ school in Singapore, it’s a living legacy. Initially, the curriculum focused on practical skills like sewing and cooking, alongside English and Christian teachings. But as Singapore evolved, so did St. Margaret’s. By the 1930s, science labs were introduced, and girls were trained for careers in business, nursing, and teaching. St. Margaret’s continued to grow, requiring a separate secondary school, which opened on Farrer Road in 1960. The iconic green polka-dot uniform, a unique symbol of St. Margaret’s, appeared in 1974, designed by their own art teacher. St. Margaret’s weathered the storms of World War II, the Japanese Occupation, and several relocations, always emerging stronger and more determined. Today, as an autonomous institution, St. Margaret’s Secondary School continues to empower young women, upholding its motto of “Charity, Patience, Devotion”, values inspired by Queen Margaret of Scotland, the school’s namesake. It stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the transformative power of education.
