In 1956, a Quezon City resolution officially designated this area as Veterans Village. But before it bore this name, it was known as Project 7, part of a grand plan by the People’s Homesite and Housing Corporation (PHHC). Veterans Village, originally part of a larger area called Bago Bantay, stands as a testament to the PHHC’s vision for Quezon City after it became the nation’s capital. The PHHC, instrumental in developing a vast 1,572-hectare land acquired from the Tuason family’s Diliman Estate, embarked on a series of housing projects. These included Roxas Homesite (Project One), the Quirino District (Projects 2, 3, and 4), and Magsaysay District (Project 6), home to the nation’s first “Newsmen row”. Veterans Village, as Project 7, played a significant role in this ambitious undertaking. Interestingly, the land allocated for Project 7 was later divided into North Bago Bantay, now Barangay Ramon Magsaysay, and South Bago Bantay, which became Veterans Village. Today, Veterans Village is home to over 12,000 residents, according to the 2020 census. Beyond the residences, Veterans Village boasts essential community facilities. These include a branch of the Quezon City public library, a social and hygiene clinic, and recreational spaces like a sports center and covered basketball court near the barangay hall. Several religious institutions are located along EDSA Southbound, Bansalangin, and Anahaw Streets near Veterans Village. These include the Word of Hope Church, Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ, Jesus Is Lord, Church of Christ, Ang Dating Daan – Lokal ng Muñoz, National Shrine of Ina Poon Bato, and the Christ The King Roman Catholic parish church. Veterans Village has also seen its share of challenges. In 2017, a former barangay captain faced legal action for alleged neglect of duty related to road obstructions. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to maintain and improve this vibrant community. From its origins as part of the PHHC’s vision to its current status as a bustling barangay, Veterans Village represents a piece of Quezon City’s ongoing development.
