Hidden within the vibrant heart of Buenos Aires lies a sanctuary, the Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz. A place of worship, yes, but also a testament to the enduring spirit of the Argentine people. The Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz stands as a silent witness to the trials and triumphs of a nation. Founded in 1882 by Irish Passionist Fathers, the Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz began as a modest chapel. It was nestled within the “Manzana Santa Cruz,” an area embraced by the streets Estados Unidos, General Urquiza, Carlos Calvo, and 24 de Noviembre. The Passionists, an order founded by St. Paul of the Cross, carried their devotion to the suffering of Christ and their missionary zeal to Argentina. This passion fueled their commitment to the community. They offered solace and strength during turbulent times. A unique feature of the Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz is the central placement of the altar. This deliberate arrangement symbolizes the table of communion. It echoes Jesus’s gatherings with his disciples. It emphasizes the shared faith and collective spirit of the congregation. The altar itself holds sacred relics. These include a relic of St. Paul of the Cross and a piece of cloth stained with the blood of Father Carlos Mugica. Father Mugica was a priest and advocate for the poor. He was assassinated in 1974. Behind the altar, a striking painting by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel depicts a resurrected Jesus with a Latin American countenance, walking among his people. The Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz also serves as a poignant memorial. Photographs of those who championed human rights during Argentina’s dark period of dictatorship adorn the walls. These include Archbishop Óscar Romero, Bishop Enrique Angelelli, and Father Mugica. There are also pictures of the “Twelve of the Santa Cruz,” individuals abducted from the parish in 1977 and later victims of the “death flights.” In the adjacent garden, the “Solar de la Memoria” (Memory Garden) honors these victims with twelve headstones and the remains of five whose bodies were recovered. This space extends the sanctuary’s embrace beyond its walls. It intertwines the stories of faith and human rights. The Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz also houses a Calvary. It was erected after World War II during the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A plaque on the wall commemorates the twelve disappeared in 1977. During the dictatorship, the parish became a refuge. It sheltered those seeking justice and offered solace to those persecuted for their beliefs. The Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen y de la Santa Cruz stands as more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, resilience, and the pursuit of justice.
