The ninth bishop of Paris rests here. His legacy echoes through the very stones of Église Saint-Marcel.

Église Saint-Marcel isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and architectural evolution. Standing proudly in Paris’s 13th arrondissement it holds a history spanning centuries.

From a humble oratory marking the burial site of Saint Marcel in the 4th or 5th century AD it grew. A small chapel arose later. Then a collegiate church in 1158. This wasn’t just any saint. Saint Marcel was one of Lutetia’s three patron saints alongside Saint Denis and Sainte Geneviève. His tomb a pilgrimage site lay along the Roman road linking Lutetia to Lyon and Italy. The area became the little town of Saint-Marcel.

That original church sadly met its end in 1806. But the spirit of Saint Marcel persevered. In 1856 a neo-Gothic church rose at 80 Boulevard de l’Hôpital. It served its purpose until 1962. Then a new vision arose. The current Église Saint-Marcel a stunning example of 1960s contemporary architecture. The father and son team Daniel and Jean Michelin designed it.

The new church boasts two distinct parts a lower church for events and the main upper church. The high altar a magnificent creation of blue granite from the Tarn River stands in the choir. There you’ll also find a striking crucifix created by Mgr Michel Aupetit. Two copper statues of Bishop Marcel and the Virgin Mary grace the choir. They are the work of master Jean Cattant.

A unique feature is the pyramidal bell tower. It stands 25 meters tall topped with a weather vane shaped like a rooster. It houses three bells Honorine Geneviève and Rosalie. Honorine hails from the old church. Geneviève and Rosalie came as a gift from the city a fascinating story in themselves.

The stained-glass windows are simply breathtaking. The façade window depicts Saint Marcel. The master glassmaker Guérin created it. The chapel windows designed by Isabelle Rouault (daughter of the famous painter Georges Rouault) feature rich purples and blues.

The Église Saint-Marcel isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a treasure trove of artistry history and faith. A place where the past present and future intertwine. A place to pause reflect and appreciate the enduring spirit of Saint Marcel. A place where you can still feel the weight of history the warmth of community and the enduring power of faith.
