Imagine 140 beds in a single building. That’s the Gertrudenherberge in Lubeck. Right here before you stands this remarkable medieval pilgrim’s hostel. Built around 1360 it provided shelter for weary travelers. These pilgrims journeyed along a branch of the famous Camino de Santiago. They came from across Northern and Northeastern Europe. The route took them through the Rhineland and Bruges before reaching Lubeck. Lubeck’s port on the Baltic Sea was a crucial stopping point.

The Gertrudenherberge’s construction coincided with devastating plague outbreaks. In 1350 and 1367 Lubeck lost 25% and 15% of its population respectively. A large plague cemetery St Gertrud’s Cemetery was established. A chapel dedicated to St Gertrud was also built. It’s important to note that while connected to the Gertrudenherberge it wasn’t located nearby. It was instead situated at the new cemetery on the Burgfeld.

Pilgrims at the Gertrudenherberge enjoyed 70 double beds. They could stay for a maximum of three days. After a long and difficult journey a short rest was essential. The Gertrudenherberge offered a safe haven before continuing their pilgrimage.

For centuries the Gertrudenherberge’s significance remained hidden. Its true value was only rediscovered during renovation in the 21st century. The building had been divided into apartments. The incredible Gothic hall on the ground floor was almost lost forever. However thanks to experts the building and its artistic treasures were saved. The owners transferred their rights to the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital foundation.

The foundation along with the Possehl Foundation and the association Frau und Kultur now preserves this important historical site. The restoration uncovered magnificent 14th-century frescoes. These stunning images include St Christopher, John the Baptist and the apostles Peter and Paul. A monk possibly an Antonite is also depicted. The frescoes were later overpainted with foliage during the Reformation.

The late discovery of the Gertrudenherberge highlights challenges in preserving Lubeck’s medieval heritage. The Gertrudenherberge stands as a testament to Lubeck’s history. It shows the city’s importance as a pilgrimage destination and its resilience after hardship. It is a site worthy of respect and appreciation. Today the Gertrudenherberge continues to fascinate and educate visitors. It’s a powerful reminder of the past and a precious part of Lubeck’s legacy.
