Hidden in plain sight on Palmer Square stands Old Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church. Don’t be fooled by its unassuming exterior! This church holds a unique tale. While it might look like a typical Gothic structure, its heart beats with the spirit of the Serbian Orthodox faith. Interestingly, the church wasn’t always a Serbian Orthodox sanctuary. Built in 1910, it originally served an Anglican congregation. However, a fire in 1968 ravaged its interior. As fate would have it, the declining Episcopalian community sold the building to the growing Serbian Orthodox population. What you see inside today is a testament to their dedication and faith. Serbian artists, like the renowned Filip Subotic, have adorned the church with beautiful frescoes and iconic imagery, transforming it into a captivating blend of architectural styles and religious traditions. Look closely, and you’ll spot the iconic image of St. George slaying the dragon. This fascinating mix of history and art makes Old Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church a true hidden gem of Chicago!
