The Fawkham War Memorial is a place we should all stop and reflect on. It stands as a monument to the sacrifice of local people during the First and Second World Wars. A rough-hewn Latin cross with a tapered shaft set on a square plinth and square base. The inscription tells the story of heroism and loss.
The memorial is a testament to a time of great upheaval in the world. It reminds us of the immense cost and hardship faced by many people during those years. This memorial isn’t just a stone monument, but a reminder of the courage and spirit of the men and women who lived and died in the area. It stands as a reminder to ensure we never forget the bravery of those who served so gallantly and so tragically.
The inscription on the plinth reads: “THIS CROSS/ IS PLACED HERE IN ORDER/ THAT WE MAY NEVER FORGET/ (names)/ OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED/ FOR OUR COUNTRY 1914-1918”. And the shaft reads, “1939-45/ (name)”.
The memorial was erected by the community of Fawkham Green who had lost seven residents in World War I and one in World War II. It was made from granite and was constructed sometime after the First World War. It’s worth noting that it was restored in 2007.
It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for peace and freedom. We might be standing in the midst of peaceful times, but the importance of the Fawkham War Memorial remains as strong as ever. It’s a reminder of how fragile peace is and how easily it can be shattered.
