Approved in 1878, Bulevar General Artigas stands as more than just a road. It is a testament to Montevideo’s expansion after the Uruguayan Civil War. Let’s take a walk down this iconic boulevard.

The Bulevar General Artigas is often simply called “Bulevar” by locals. This shows how important it is for orientation in the city. This boulevard got its name in 1885. It was named after Uruguay’s national hero, General José Gervasio Artigas.

Originally known as Circunvalación Boulevard, it marked the edge of the “New City”. This “New City” developed after the old city fortifications were torn down. That explains its unique 90-degree turn.

The Bulevar General Artigas stretches 10.5 kilometers. It begins at Rambla Presidente Wilson in Punta Carretas. Then it extends to Rambla at Capurro-Bella Vista. Imagine the city unfolding as we travel north. Then, the boulevard turns west.

As we explore Bulevar General Artigas, notice how it connects sixteen barrios. It is a vital link between Montevideo’s central neighborhoods. It also provides access to various national routes.

Look around. We see intersections with major avenues. Avenida Agraciada. Avenida General Flores. Avenida 8 de Octubre. These all connect Montevideo to other Uruguayan cities.

One notable landmark is the Obelisco a los Constituyentes de 1830. It stands where Avenida 18 de Julio ends. The Bulevar General Artigas also passes through Tres Cruces. This is a busy transport hub.

Continuing our walk, we reach the Monumento a Luis Batlle Berres. It sits in front of the Edificio Libertad, formerly the Presidential headquarters. The boulevard then turns west, finally ending in Bella Vista.

Take in the boulevard’s design. It is 40 meters wide. Wide sidewalks invite pedestrians. Two roadways are separated by a central strip. The section from Punta Carretas to Tres Cruces boasts beautiful landscaping. The original design of these ornamental gardens came from the French landscaper Carlos Racine.

Interestingly, Bulevar General Artigas is not unique to Montevideo. Other cities in Uruguay share the name. Paysandú, Maldonado, Punta del Este, Melo and Vichadero all have their own Bulevar Artigas.

Think about José Gervasio Artigas as you stroll along Bulevar General Artigas. Artist Juan Manuel Blanes captured the general in his painting “Artigas en la puerta de la Ciudadela.” This artwork shows Artigas at Montevideo’s defensive walls. It is a powerful image.

So, as we conclude our walk, remember Bulevar General Artigas. It is more than just a street. It is a symbol of Montevideo’s growth. It is a tribute to a national hero. It is a vital part of the city’s identity.
