Its story begins not in Manila but in Pangasinan a province further north.
The original chapel Santa Monica was built by the Augustinians way back in 1600. It was located where the graveyard now stands. The Dominicans took over in 1605. They eventually moved the church to its current elevated location in 1701. Wealthy Manileños Gaspar de Gamboa and his wife Agata Yangta sponsored the construction. Imagine the effort and devotion that went into building this majestic structure. They persevered through threats from Igorot tribes and earthquakes.
The Philippine Revolution brought turmoil. Revolutionaries burned down the church. Our Lady of Manaoag’s image though miraculously survived. It was found abandoned and secretly moved to Dagupan for safekeeping. The image is an exquisite 17th-century ivory carving of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus.
After the war the Dominicans returned. They completed the church largely as it stands today by 1912. The renowned Tampinco Atelier of Manila crafted the central retablo. It’s a masterpiece of Baroque artistry. The transepts weren’t finished until 1931-32. Even Japanese bombardment during World War II couldn’t destroy the spirit of this church. It was rebuilt and stands as a symbol of unwavering faith.
In 1926 Our Lady of Manaoag’s image was canonically crowned. The Catholic Church officially recognized the Virgin Mary under this title. The church received further recognition. In 2011 Pope Benedict XVI established a special spiritual bond with the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. Pilgrims visiting Our Lady of Manaoag Church receive the same indulgences as those visiting a papal basilica in Rome. Then in 2014 Pope Francis elevated the shrine to a Minor Basilica.
