Ever wonder what Christmas looks like with a separate power supply? That is Peteyville Christmas Lights. Here at 3033 Crane Place in Hammond, Indiana, you are standing before a spectacle born from Pete Basala’s boundless Christmas spirit.

Peteyville Christmas Lights is not just a display. It is a 37-year-old tradition. Since 1987, Pete Basala has been transforming his and his neighbors’ yards into a winter wonderland.

Imagine a city block ablaze with thousands of lights. Giant inflatables tower above you. A 26-foot reindeer named Randy stands guard. Santas, snowmen, and a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man join the festive scene.

Peteyville’s lights are on every night. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, the magic unfolds. Weather permitting, of course. High winds can bring the inflatables down.

Pete’s dedication is legendary. His arms are covered in Christmas tattoos. They feature festive lights and characters from “A Christmas Story”.

Speaking of “A Christmas Story,” Jean Shepherd, the author, grew up just blocks from here. The movie’s fictional town of Hohman is actually one of Hammond’s main streets.

Listen closely. Peteyville even has its own radio station. Tune in to hear the history of the display. An Emmy-nominated artist sings a song about Peteyville.

Look around and you will see families taking photos. These spots are perfect for keepsake portraits. Many return year after year.

Peteyville needs so much electricity that NIPSCO installed a separate meter. Pilots flying into Midway and O’Hare might even spot it. It is a beacon of holiday cheer.

Pete’s wife, Tina, is his biggest supporter. She is an elf. She decorates the inside of their home with over a dozen trees.

Pete is slowing down a bit. But he hopes to keep Peteyville going as long as he can.

Peteyville is more than lights. It is a tradition. It is a place where memories are made. It is a place where the Christmas spirit shines bright. So take it all in. You are experiencing a true labor of love. A place that brings joy to countless faces each year.
