“Rosewell Parish Church,” the sign reads. I guess you’re probably asking yourself what makes this church so special? Rosewell Parish Church has a story of community, change, and reunion.

Let me set the scene. This church wasn’t always here. Rosewell became a separate parish in 1874. The church was constructed between 1871 and 1872. It provided a place of worship for a growing community.

Rosewell’s population was recorded as 1,394 in 1881. The church became a focal point for the village. It offered spiritual guidance.

In 1966, Rev James H. Sinclair became the minister. He was the last to serve Rosewell alone. After his departure in 1987, the parish remained vacant for some time.

Then, in 1991, Rosewell Parish Church linked with Cockpen & Carrington Parish Church and Lasswade Parish Church. This meant they would share resources and ministry.

Before Rosewell Parish Church was built, the people of Rosewell were part of Lasswade Parish. Lasswade and Rosewell Parish Church serves the communities of Lasswade, Poltonhall and Rosewell. It is a congregation of the Church of Scotland.

A significant change occurred in 2008. Lasswade and Rosewell formally united. They created a single Kirk Session. But they kept both places of worship. The congregation became known as Lasswade and Rosewell Parish Church. This unification reflected changing times. It also ensured the church’s continued presence in both communities.

The Church Hall also serves as a War Memorial for Rosewell and surrounding district. Inside is a memorial plaque. It lists the names of men from the village and surrounding area who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

Today, Lasswade and Rosewell Parish Church continues to be an active part of the community. It welcomes people from diverse backgrounds. They gather to worship God and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. The church expresses love for God. It shows practical care for each other. It also cares for those they encounter daily.

So, as you stand before Rosewell Parish Church, remember its journey. Think about its evolution. Appreciate its role in bringing people together. It stands as a symbol of faith, community, and enduring spirit.
