In the quiet outskirts of Lisbon, stands the Padrão do Senhor Roubado. It’s not just a monument. It’s a story etched in stone and azulejo tiles. The Padrão do Senhor Roubado whispers tales of a daring heist, a city in an uproar, and a thief’s desperate gamble. The Padrão do Senhor Roubado commemorates a theft from the Odivelas church in 1671. A young man, António Ferreira, stole valuables, including rosary beads, sacred vestments, and holy vessels. He hid them in a reed bed, where the Padrão do Senhor Roubado stands today. News of the sacrilegious act reached Lisbon. The court went into mourning, processions filled the streets, and rewards were offered for the culprit’s capture. The stolen items were eventually found. António Ferreira was later caught stealing chickens at the Odivelas Monastery. A silver cross, part of the stolen artifacts, was found in his possession. He confessed to the church robbery and faced a grim sentence. He was dragged to Lisbon’s Rossio Square, his hands were severed and burned before his eyes, and finally, his body was burned. A wooden cross was initially placed on an olive tree at the site of the hidden treasures. Later, a religious man named António dos Santos transformed it into the stone Padrão do Senhor Roubado that we see today. He used stones donated from the Paradela quarry and paid for the labor with alms. The Padrão do Senhor Roubado became a place for the faithful to seek forgiveness for their sins. The monument sits within a trapezoidal enclosure. It resembles an open-air temple with a Tuscan-columned porch and a pulpit. The western wall is adorned with monochrome azulejo tiles. Twelve panels depict the story of the theft and António Ferreira’s fate. The Padrão do Senhor Roubado serves as a somber reminder of a dramatic event that shook 17th-century Lisbon. It stands as a testament to the religious fervor of the time. It also tells the story of a desperate man who paid the ultimate price for his crime.
