Deep within Shanghai stands the Yue Wang Temple a monument to loyalty and patriotism. Have you heard of Yue Fei? He was a military general of the Southern Song Dynasty. He lived from 1103 to 1142. Yue Fei is celebrated as a national hero in Chinese culture. His story is one of unwavering dedication to his country.

The Yue Wang Temple commemorates Yue Fei’s life and values. It is a place where people honor his spirit. Imagine stepping through the temple’s gate. You find yourself in a serene patio. Towering trees stand guard on either side.

The Shrine of Remembrance Hall is in the center. Inside stands a sculpture of Yue Fei. He looks solemn and mighty ready to defend his land. He holds a sword in his hand. Above the sculpture is a tablet. It bears Yue Fei’s original handwriting. It says, “returning our territory and keeping it integrated.” Large pictures behind the hall depict Yue Fei’s life. Look down at the floor. You’ll see a picture of 373 cranes. These cranes symbolize his integrity and faithfulness.

To the west is a yard. Corridors display poems praising Yue Fei. Cross the bridge. Here lie the tombs of Yue Fei and his son Yue Yun. Yue Yun assisted his father in battle. Stone horses tigers and sheep decorate the enclosure. These sculptures date back to the Ming Dynasty.

Facing the tombs are four iron sculptures. These figures kneel in perpetual atonement. One of them is Qin Kuai. He was the chief plotter against Yue Fei. People want them to atone for their crimes forever.

Legend says Yue Fei had four characters tattooed on his back. These characters read “serve the country with the utmost loyalty.” Some say his mother gave him the tattoo. She wanted to ensure his unwavering loyalty. She feared unworthy people might tempt him after her death. So she tattooed the words on his back with ink mixed with vinegar. She ensured the color would never fade.

The Yue Wang Temple has been rebuilt several times. The current structure dates back to 1715 during the Qing Dynasty. It underwent comprehensive repairs in 1979.

Visiting the Yue Wang Temple offers a glimpse into Chinese history. It reminds us of the values of loyalty patriotism and integrity. Take a moment to reflect on Yue Fei’s legacy. Consider the sacrifices he made for his country. The Yue Wang Temple stands as a timeless symbol of these virtues a testament to a hero who continues to inspire generations.
