Whispers of the past echo around us here at Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park. This is not just a park. Sia Boey is a living testament to George Town’s vibrant history.

Sia Boey, also known as the “end of town”, was once a bustling trading area. This was the heart of George Town in the 19th century. Imagine a hive of activity centered around the Prangin Canal. Think of the market hall and the shophouses teeming with merchants and goods.

The Hokkien community thrived here in the mid-1880s. Malays, Indians, and Acehnese also contributed to Sia Boey’s diverse trading sector. This area was a melting pot of cultures and commerce.

However, times changed. The Sia Boey Market relocated in the early 2000s. For a while, the site was considered for Penang Island’s transit hub. The Komtar LRT Station was even planned here. Local resistance saved Sia Boey’s heritage.

In 2015, a significant discovery changed Sia Boey’s fate. Archaeologists unearthed a granite construction. It was identified as the Old Prangin Canal Basin. This discovery sparked the idea for Malaysia’s first Urban Archaeological Park.

The Sia Boey Rejuvenation Project began in 2018. The Prangin Canal was rehabilitated. The Old Prangin Market was conserved. The landscaping was upgraded. Sia Boey was reborn as a place where development and history coexist.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow opened Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park on November 9, 2019. Today, Sia Boey enhances George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site status. It provides space for local residents. Sia Boey embodies heritage conservation, cultural education, and sustainable development.

Take a look around. Notice the revitalized Prangin Canal filled with koi fish. Observe the aged-old trees providing shade. Listen to the laughter from the children’s playground. Sia Boey is more than just a park. It is a place where the past comes alive. It is a place where the community gathers. Sia Boey is a testament to the enduring spirit of George Town.
