What secrets does Tábor-hegy hold? Tábor-hegy is more than just a peak in the Buda Hills. It’s a keeper of stories, nestled within the embrace of the larger Hármashatár-hegy massif. This southeastern spur of the 495-meter peak stands at 396 meters, proudly residing in the III district, in the Hármashatárhegy neighborhood. Tábor-hegy slopes down towards the heart of Óbuda. Its eastern slopes cradle the namesake Táborhegy neighborhood. Tábor-hegy, like its larger counterpart, Hármashatár-hegy, is composed of Eocene dolomite, topped with nummulite limestone and bryozoan marl. A mixed forest cloaks its slopes. The name Tábor-hegy has a dual history. Some believe it refers to a nearby Roman military camp. Others suggest it originated from a military camp (Lagerberg in German) established here during the recapture of Buda. Within Tábor-hegy lies the Tábor-hegyi-barlang (Tábor-hegy Cave), a 162-meter-long cavern. A viewing terrace has been constructed in front of it. Tábor-hegy also played a role in the unfinished Óbuda gas defense system. Its construction led to the discovery of the Királylaki-barlang (Királylaki Cave). While the higher peaks of the Hármashatár-hegy massif mostly straddle the border of districts II and III, Tábor-hegy lies entirely within district III, east of the district boundary. The 495-meter Hármashatár-hegy is to its northwest. The 443-meter Felső-Kecske-hegy and the 397-meter Alsó-Kecske-hegy are to the west-northwest and southwest respectively, largely in district II. The Hármashatárhegyi út separates these latter two from the main peak and also serves as the district boundary. Farther south lie the 351-meter Remete-hegy and the 301-meter Mátyás-hegy. To reach Tábor-hegy, take the 137 bus from Szentlélek tér near the Buda side of Árpád Bridge. It terminates at Máramaros út, one of the highest streets in the Táborhegy neighborhood. The bus route traverses Erdőalja, Királylaki, and Máramaros streets, all at roughly the same elevation as the terminus, offering various approach points to Tábor-hegy. The most convenient are from Hedvig utca, the upper section of Királylaki út, and the Máramaros út bus terminus. The 65 bus from Kolosy tér to Fenyőgyöngye Restaurant, where Hármashatárhegyi út branches off Szépvölgyi út, also offers relatively easy access. Several hiking trails around Hármashatár-hegy also touch upon Tábor-hegy.
