Stepping into The Space is like stepping back in time. This beautiful building used to be a church. It was built in 1859. The church was built on land that was once owned by the Earl of Strafford. The foundation stone was laid by John Scott Russell, the Scottish builder of the “Great Eastern” ship. The church stood for decades and was used for religious services. But in 1972, the congregation moved to a new location. For many years, the building remained empty. However, in 1989, a group of people decided to transform it into a place for creativity and community. They created The Space. This building is a Grade II listed building, meaning it is considered to be historically important. It was so important they spent £800,000 restoring it. You’ll see modern facilities combined with original features of the building, such as a beautiful stained glass window. Imagine how artists have made their way to perform on this stage, where a church congregation used to worship. Local residents regularly visit The Space to watch plays, dance performances and musical acts, and see artworks on display. It is a vibrant space, and there are often events and workshops held here, all designed to foster creativity and bring people together. The Space really is a unique and inspiring part of London’s cultural landscape.
