Isn’t it remarkable how the Immanuelkirche in Munich rises so steeply into the sky? This striking church stands in the Denning district. It marks the northeastern edge of the city. Here, the Immanuelkirche bridges the gap between the Bogenhausen district and the Messestadt Riem.
The Immanuelkirche is a modern Lutheran church. It has been part of the Immanuel-Nazareth parish since 2012. The church’s architecture is quite distinctive.
Franz Lichtblau and Ludwig Bauer designed the Immanuelkirche. Construction took place between 1965 and 1966. The Immanuelkirche is considered one of Munich’s modern sacred buildings. The building site was very small. This led to the church’s unique design. It soars upwards like a tent. Beside it stands an 18-meter-high campanile.
Inside the Immanuelkirche, you will find beautiful artwork. Hubert Distler created the altar fresco. It depicts a crucifixion scene. Distler also designed the six windows. The Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich crafted these windows. Karlheinz Hoffmann created the altar. He also made the altar cross, candleholders, baptismal font, and pulpit.
The Immanuelkirche also has a significant musical history. The organ sits on the gallery. Johannes Rohlf built it in 1995. It replaced a 1938 Steinmeyer organ. The older organ had come from the Stephanuskirche Nymphenburg. That church received a new organ. The current organ boasts 23 registers. It also features two special effect registers. These are spread across two manuals and a pedal. The action is mechanical.
The Immanuelkirche community is very active. Their motto is “Immanuel shines from within outwards.” The parish has over 4500 members. They are involved in the social and cultural life of the district. Church music is very important to the Immanuelkirche community. They also host discussions with public figures. These talks address current social, economic, and social issues.
In 2012, the Immanuelkirche merged with the Nazarethkirche. Together, they formed the Immanuel-Nazareth parish. This new community has almost 6000 members. Pastors Markus Rhinow and Christine Untch lead the congregation.
The Immanuelkirche is more than just a building. It is a center of community. Its modern design and vibrant congregation make it a unique landmark in Munich. It is a testament to faith. It also shows community engagement in a changing world.
