Higher than Westminster Abbey’s nave That’s the Bentall Centre for you. Right here in Kingston upon Thames stands a retail giant. A shopping centre unlike any other. It opened in November 1992. But its story began much earlier. In 1867 Bentalls department store first opened on this very spot. It evolved and expanded. By 1935 it boasted a magnificent facade designed by Maurice Webb. This beautiful design survived the extensive renovations. It still stands today a testament to the past.
Construction of the Bentall Centre itself began in 1987. It took five years to complete. This massive project included a five-level department store and a four-level shopping centre. The existing store remained open during much of the construction. Imagine the dust and the disruption. But the result was spectacular. A retail cathedral as some described it. With high vaulted ceilings and an impressive atrium. The atrium’s ceiling is taller than the nave of Westminster Abbey. It’s even taller than St Paul’s Cathedral dome. Talk about impressive.
The Bentall Centre is more than just a place to shop. It’s a landmark. A unique structure. This is home to over 75 stores. Bentalls itself remains a major tenant. Other stores include Apple Zara H&M and Waterstones. The centre also boasts a truly remarkable escalator. It’s the world’s largest single truss escalator. It runs from the ground floor to the second floor. This is held up by only top and bottom supports. Impressive engineering feats and shopping combined.
The Bentall Centre also holds a piece of history. A statue of Leonard Bentall once graced the top floor. This was created by William Reid Dick. It offered a stunning view of the whole centre. However Fenwick who bought the department store in 2001 moved the statue. They felt it obstructed sightlines into the store. Another notable fact The Bentall Centre was the first in the UK to implement a complete no-smoking policy. This was a bold move at the time. A step towards a healthier environment.
Today the Bentall Centre continues to thrive. It’s a hub of activity in Kingston upon Thames. It is a testament to the vision of its creators and the enduring appeal of retail. This impressive shopping centre. A place where history and modern design blend seamlessly. A place that deserves more than a simple visit. It deserves to be explored and appreciated for its rich history and remarkable features. It’s much more than just shops and escalators. It’s a true destination. A place that holds a special place in the hearts of Kingston residents. And it’s a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
