“Ever wondered about a Scout camp with a past”? Welcome to Camp Maynard a tranquil haven nestled on 25 acres in Albany Auckland.
Camp Maynard isn’t just any campsite. It’s a place steeped in history. The land was acquired in the early 1960s thanks to Joan and Les Maynard. That’s how the camp got its name. An old school hall became the main building in 1965. Imagine that!
In 1983 a building from a local golf course joined the camp. This building got a major makeover in 1993. Bunkrooms were added. A two-story addition brought new toilet blocks and more bunkrooms. This building still stands as the main accommodation block today.
Thanks to an ASB trust grant a new hall was built in 1993. It replaced the original old school hall. A covered deck connects the two main buildings.
Since then Camp Maynard has seen many upgrades. There’s a new roof a new septic system and a fresh coat of paint. The kitchen got a complete upgrade. It’s now a modern commercial-style kitchen with stainless steel fittings. There’s even a new laundry room. This freed up space for future bathroom renovations. New bunkrooms and mattresses have also been added. This impressive campsite is a testament to years of hard work and dedication.
Camp Maynard isn’t just for Scouts and Girl Guides. Community groups and others can hire its facilities. Think school camps corporate functions or craft retreats. However it’s a quiet residential area. Noise must cease between 11 pm and 8 am including weekends.
The entire campsite is smoke-free. So if you need to light up you’ll need to leave the property. Remember this is a volunteer-run not-for-profit organization. All funds go back into maintaining and improving this special place. So your visit helps keep Camp Maynard thriving. Enjoy exploring this historical and tranquil campsite.
