The UFRJ traces its roots back to 1792. Brazil’s first higher education courses began then. President Epitácio Pessoa officially created the University of Rio de Janeiro on September 7 1920. Its history parallels Brazil’s cultural and economic growth. Many courses date back to the foundation of Brazilian higher education.

Initially the university included the Polytechnic School. This school began as the Royal Academy of Artillery Fortification and Design. The National College of Medicine also joined. Dom João VI founded it as the Academy of Medicine and Surgery. The National College of Law completed the initial group. It formed from a fusion of earlier law colleges.

Over time others joined this core. The National School of Fine Arts became part of UFRJ. The National College of Philosophy joined too. The UFRJ played a crucial role in establishing higher education in Brazil. It served as a model for later institutions.

In 1937 the institution changed its name. It became the University of Brazil. This aligned with the government’s education reforms. The goal was to control and standardize higher education nationally. This change reflected French educational ideals. It contrasted with the German model used at the University of São Paulo.

Research became institutionalized in the 1950s. Research institutes formed. Full-time academics joined. Partnerships with funding agencies grew.

By 1958 structural reforms became urgent. The university needed more participation from faculty and students. It also needed efficient resource use. Plans for reform set a new standard. They influenced Brazilian communication and government.

The UFRJ gained financial didactic and academic autonomy in 1965. It also received its current name. This naming standard is still active for federal universities.

Today the UFRJ welcomes international exchange. It maintains traditional ties. Sculptures of Minerva are scattered throughout UFRJ. Minerva is the Roman goddess of arts knowledge and intellect.

The rectory sought to reclaim the name University of Brazil in 2000. The prior name change happened during military dictatorship. The request was deferred. Both names are now acceptable.

The UFRJ runs extension courses for non-students. It also supports public health. Its nine college hospitals provide many vacancies. They deeply integrate with the state’s health network.

The UFRJ achieved a very good evaluation in 2010. It earned a maximum score from the Ministry of Education. Its emphasis on research aligns with a motto. In a university one teaches because one researches.

The UFRJ’s administration involves several councils. The University Council is the highest authority. The Curators Council oversees finances. The Undergraduate Council manages admissions. The Graduate Council handles research and postgraduate courses.

Many famous figures have served as rectors. Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão was the first. He was a doctor and member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature. Other rectors include Raul Leitão da Cunha and Pedro Calmon.

The UFRJ manages many units and departments. It has a high graduation rate. Many professors hold doctoral degrees.

The main buildings are at College City. The campus at Praia Vermelha remains important. It houses several units and departments. Additional facilities include museums and research centers.

The UFRJ is divided into university centers. These include Health Sciences Technology and Philosophy and Human Sciences. Each center focuses on specific fields of knowledge.

The UFRJ’s libraries hold important documents. The System of Libraries and Information provides access. The Minerva Base is a digital database.

Notable museums include the National Museum. The Casa da Ciência is a cultural center. It explores science technology and communication.

The university’s health complex includes nine hospitals. They provide treatments surgeries and hospitalizations. The Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital is a flagship institution.
