Did the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn always run on steam? No! The Dresdner Parkeisenbahn, nestled in Dresden’s Großer Garten, has a history as charming as a miniature train itself. Initially a temporary attraction for exhibitions in the 1930s, including the International Hygiene Exhibition, the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn chugged into existence on International Children’s Day in June 1950. Intended as a short-lived celebration, the 1.3-kilometer track between Stübelplatz (now Strassburger Platz) and the Zoo quickly captured the hearts of Dresden’s residents. A determined delegation of schoolchildren and FDJ members even journeyed to Berlin to plead with Walter Ulbricht himself to make the railway a permanent fixture. Their efforts succeeded. In 1951, the newly christened “Pioniereisenbahn Dresden” embarked on its second season, expanding to include the Carolasee and Palaisteich stations. Later that year, the Karcherallee station joined the route, completing the 5.6-kilometer loop we know today. The Dresdner Parkeisenbahn wasn’t just for fun. It was a hands-on learning experience. Children took on roles as signalmen, ticket collectors, and guards, ensuring the smooth operation of the railway. Engine drivers and track workers were provided by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. As ridership soared, reaching a peak of nearly 657,000 passengers in 1976, the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn adapted. A battery-electric locomotive joined the fleet in 1962, followed by a second in 1982, easing the workload on the original steam engines. Even with modernizations, the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn retains its historical charm. Two of the original 1925 steam locomotives, built by Krauss & Co. in Munich, still grace the tracks on weekends and special occasions. They are a living testament to the railway’s enduring appeal. The Dresdner Parkeisenbahn continues to enchant visitors, carrying approximately 250,000 passengers annually. It stands as a testament to the power of community, the dedication of its young operators, and the magic of a miniature railway winding through a beautiful park.
