From a bustling canal to a vibrant piazza, Place aux Huiles whispers tales of Marseille’s rich past. Place aux Huiles sits on the south bank of the Vieux-Port. It looks like a large esplanade. But it hides a secret. This place once housed the Canal de la Douane. This canal allowed galleys to access the arsenals. Imagine these ancient ships, powered by oars and sails, navigating the waterway that once flowed where we stand. The canal traced the path of Cours Jean-Ballard and Honoré-d’Estienne-d’Orves. Until the early 20th century, Place aux Huiles was a hub of commercial activity. Its name, “Oil Square,” comes from the barrels of oil that were loaded and unloaded here. These oils fueled Marseille’s thriving soap factories in Rue Sainte. Between 1927 and 1929, the canal was filled. In the early 1960s, a large parking lot occupied this space. The people of Marseille demanded its removal. Finally, in 1987, the parking lot was replaced with the current underground structure. Place aux Huiles was reborn. Today, Place aux Huiles resembles an Italian piazza. It was designed by Charles Bové, inspired by Rome’s Piazza Navona. Now, it’s a beloved spot for locals and tourists. Restaurants, boutiques, and even art galleries line the square. Place aux Huiles invites you to stroll, relax, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. From a busy canal to a lively piazza, Place aux Huiles has transformed with Marseille. It stands as a testament to the city’s ever-evolving spirit.
